My Thoughts on Why Don’t You Coax Me?
Why Don’t You Coax Me? promised a comedic romance, and it largely delivered, though perhaps with a few quirks that might not be for everyone. Overall, I found it an enjoyable read, but it's definitely one you need to approach with the right mindset.
First Impressions
Initially, the dynamic between the main characters, particularly the MC, struck me as… unusual. Some might even say annoying. He's definitely not your typical flawless protagonist, and his behavior can be a bit much. However, I quickly realized that this was intentional, and part of the charm (or, for some, the challenge) of the story.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. The novel doesn't take itself too seriously, and I found myself laughing out loud at several points. I also appreciated the supporting characters; they added a lot of depth and levity to the story. The author also does a pretty good job of weaving in the trauma of the main characters into the plot. It's not all fluff and romance, both of the main characters have to work through some pretty big issues.
What I liked most was the portrayal of their relationship. Yes, it's unconventional, and yes, it might even seem toxic to some. But the author makes it clear that this dynamic works for them, and that they genuinely love and understand each other, flaws and all. I liked that the story was, at its heart, one of healing and growth.
Areas of Concern
The MC's high-maintenance personality might be a turn-off for some readers. Also, the sheer number of side characters can be a little overwhelming at times, making it hard to keep track of everyone.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find their on-again, off-again relationship to be toxic. The constant fighting and breaking up over small things might seem exhausting, but it's important to remember that this behavior stems from their individual traumas and insecurities. Also, the MC is called uncle and nieces by his fans in the novel.
Final Verdict
Despite its quirks, Why Don’t You Coax Me? is a worthwhile read if you're looking for a lighthearted and funny romance with flawed but ultimately lovable characters. It's not perfect, but it's entertaining, and I appreciated the author's willingness to create a relationship dynamic that defies conventional norms. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
