My Thoughts on How Could I Lose to Him
"How Could I Lose to Him" promised a blend of comedy, romance, and sports, and for the most part, it delivered a pretty enjoyable experience. While not without its flaws, the novel's strengths lie in its engaging characters and the slow-burn romance that blossoms between them.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the "Tom and Jerry" dynamic hinted at between the main characters. The premise of a cold, seemingly indifferent protagonist paired with a more laid-back, even clingy, love interest felt refreshing. I was intrigued to see how their relationship would unfold amidst the backdrop of school life and competitive tennis.
What Works Well
The characters are definitely a highlight. The protagonist's struggles with a mental health condition, while perhaps not perfectly portrayed, added depth and complexity to his character. His journey of opening up and allowing himself to be vulnerable was compelling. The male lead, with his hidden depths and surprisingly emotional nature, proved to be a great match for the protagonist.
I found the development of the main couple's relationship quite satisfying. It wasn't instant love; they started with misunderstandings and a bit of teasing, which gradually evolved into genuine affection. The author did a good job of portraying the nuances of their feelings, especially as they navigated the complexities of teenage romance. The tennis aspect was surprisingly engaging, even for someone who isn't typically a sports novel fan. The matches were described well, creating a sense of tension and excitement.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, there were a few aspects that didn't quite hit the mark for me. Some plot points felt a bit out of place, and the angst in the middle felt somewhat forced and unnecessary. The side couple's relationship, while intended to be comedic, came across as toxic and didn't resonate with me personally. Additionally, the handling of the protagonist's mental health, while appreciated for its inclusion, could have been explored with more depth and sensitivity.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers pointed out that the stepsister disappears after the divorce and the mother's treatment of the MC might be outdated.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "How Could I Lose to Him" is a worthwhile read. It's a cute, coming-of-age story with relatable characters and a heartwarming romance. While it may not be a perfect novel, it offers an enjoyable escape into the world of teenage friendships, competitive sports, and the blossoming of first love. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a lighthearted and engaging BL novel with a touch of drama and a healthy dose of "OP MC" moments. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
