My Thoughts on Who Cares
Who Cares is a web novel that certainly stirred up some strong feelings in its readers, and after diving in, I can see why. With its blend of drama, fantasy, historical elements, and romance, it offers a lot, but it doesn't always land perfectly.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a reborn protagonist adopting a "who cares?" attitude. It seemed like a refreshing take on the revenge trope. The early chapters, with their philosophical debates and glimpses into ancient Chinese society, were engaging. However, I quickly realized that this novel demands patience and a willingness to engage with complex characters and themes.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the female lead (FL) for her intelligence and level-headedness. I agree that she's a compelling character, especially in how she uses logic and reasoning to navigate tricky situations. Her family, particularly her grandfather, also stood out as a highlight. The intricate philosophical discussions, while potentially dense, offer a unique layer to the story, diving into Confucianism and Legalism. The translator deserves serious credit for their hard work in making these sections understandable. I also appreciated that the author attempted to create morally grey characters, making their actions feel more realistic, if not always palatable.
Areas of Concern
However, the male lead (ML), the Emperor, seems to be a point of contention. Some readers found his behavior pushy and even disturbing, particularly his actions towards the FL and his role in her previous marriage. I can understand this criticism. While the story attempts to justify his actions with his difficult upbringing, it doesn't entirely excuse them. I also noticed that some felt the FL's "who cares?" attitude sometimes translated into a lack of agency, making her seem passive despite her intelligence. Additionally, the sudden introduction of fantastical elements later in the story felt somewhat jarring.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mention the ML's initial marriage decree causing the FL to marry her ex-husband again and his continued pampering of his former friend's wife, which stirred negative feelings. Also, the FL's previous life and the ex-wife's conspiracies are discussed.
Final Verdict
Who Cares is a novel with great potential, but it might not be for everyone. If you enjoy complex characters, philosophical debates, and a nuanced romance with morally grey areas, you might find it rewarding. However, if you prefer straightforward narratives and clear-cut heroes, you might find yourself frustrated. Ultimately, I'd recommend giving it a try, but be prepared for a story that challenges your expectations and doesn't shy away from uncomfortable themes.
