My Thoughts on Second Marriage
"Second Marriage" promised a sweet historical romance, and for the most part, it delivered. While it didn't completely blow me away, it was an enjoyable read with likeable characters and a fairly straightforward plot. If you're looking for something light and easy, this might be right up your alley.
First Impressions
I went into this expecting a story similar to other "marrying the relative" tropes, but I was pleasantly surprised. The premise is simple: Xiao Youning faces disgrace after her engagement is called off, leading her to an unexpected connection with Ye Shen, the uncle of her former fiancé. The story quickly becomes focused on their relationship, which I found endearing.
What Works Well
The relationship between Xiao Youning and Ye Shen is definitely the highlight. I particularly appreciated that Ye Shen didn't fall head-over-heels instantly. His growing affection felt more realistic, and once he realized his feelings, he was upfront and honest, which I found refreshing. Xiao Youning is also a likeable character. She's not overly powerful, but she is smart, calm, and resilient, which I admire. The story moves at a good pace. It's short enough that it doesn't drag, and there are enough twists and turns to keep me engaged. Plus, I really liked that the male lead wasn't the typical cold, arrogant type. He has a good relationship with his mother, which is always a welcome change.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, some aspects felt rushed or underdeveloped. The ending, in particular, felt a bit abrupt, and I would have loved to see more of their married life. Also, some plot points felt unnecessary, like the male lead's true lineage. Some found it didn't add much to the overall narrative and created unnecessary confusion. Also, some found plot holes in the storyline, and some found the female lead's intelligence to be questionable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, so here's where things get a little spoilery. A few readers pointed out issues with the plot surrounding the FL's father and brother's disappearance and the ML's true lineage. Apparently, they were involved in a covert mission, and the ML is actually the Emperor's nephew. Some felt these plot points were either unnecessary or poorly explained, leading to some confusion.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Second Marriage" is a charming historical romance that's perfect for a quick and easy read. While it has some flaws, the sweet relationship between the main characters and the relatively straightforward plot make it an enjoyable experience. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something lighthearted and don't mind a few minor plot holes.
