My Thoughts on When an Angst Writer Meets a Doting Writer
"When an Angst Writer Meets a Doting Writer" promised a fluffy, comedic romance, and for the most part, it delivered. It’s a quick read, perfect if you're looking for something light and heartwarming to breeze through. While it has its flaws, the core of the story – the budding relationship between the two writers – is genuinely sweet.
First Impressions
I was drawn in by the premise: a writer of angsty, dog-blood dramas finding love with someone who appreciates his work and showers him with affection. The online romance aspect added another layer of intrigue. I was hoping for a story that would make me laugh and maybe even shed a tear or two.
What Works Well
The comedic elements are definitely a strong point. The interactions between Xu Chi (the angst writer) and his number one fan, Tingting, are hilarious. I especially enjoyed Tingting's over-the-top reactions to Xu Chi's stories. The story moves at a nice pace, not too fast, not too slow. It's easy to get invested in the characters and root for them. The novel does a good job of exploring the insecurities and vulnerabilities that even successful writers can face.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some aspects lacking. The character development could have been more robust. I felt like Xu Chi's initial motivation for writing was never fully explored, which made his reaction to criticism feel a bit inconsistent. There was also a plot point regarding the love interest hiding his sexuality that I found unnecessary and somewhat frustrating. It felt like a forced conflict that didn't quite fit with the otherwise lighthearted tone. It would have been nice to see the characters develop their relationships more organically in real life and have a chance to meet Tingting.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
I agree with the reviewer who was disappointed by the ML's initial deception regarding his sexuality. It felt like a needless plot device that detracted from the overall sweetness of the story.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "When an Angst Writer Meets a Doting Writer" is an enjoyable read. It's perfect for those seeking a short, fluffy shounen ai romance with plenty of comedic moments. While it might not be the most profound or groundbreaking story, it's a heartwarming and entertaining escape. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something light and sweet to pass the time.
