My Thoughts on What To Do If The System Forces You To Exercise
"What To Do If The System Forces You To Exercise" had me hooked from the quirky title alone. The premise – a frail girl suddenly gifted with superhuman abilities by a system that forces her to work out? Sign me up! But, like a grueling workout that starts strong and ends with you collapsing on the floor, my experience with this novel was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The beginning is undeniably charming. The initial chapters introduce a sweet, sheltered MC whose life is turned upside down by this bizarre system. I found myself laughing at her fish-out-of-water reactions and enjoying the fluffy, lighthearted tone. Her family dynamic is heartwarming, and the hints of a future yuri romance with a stunning actress were definitely intriguing.
What Works Well
The early focus on the system-driven missions and the MC's transformation into a surprisingly strong individual is where the novel shines. There's a fun gap moe element as she surprises everyone with her newfound strength. The translation is also well done, which made the initial chapters flow smoothly and kept me engaged. The author writes likeable characters and has you rooting for them.
Areas of Concern
However, the story seems to lose its way as it progresses. The system, the very core of the premise, fades into the background. I found myself wondering what happened to those hard-earned points and the promised martial arts skill books. A lengthy variety show arc dominates a significant portion of the novel and made the central plot feel completely forgotten. I was also disappointed that the MC's character seemed inconsistent, sometimes portrayed as intelligent and sometimes as inexplicably dense.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have pointed out a jarring tonal shift towards the end of the novel. Apparently, there's a dark and disturbing sequence involving a kidnapping and some violent acts. This felt wildly out of place given the initially fluffy and comedic nature of the story.
Final Verdict
"What To Do If The System Forces You To Exercise" is a fun, lighthearted read – initially. If you're looking for a low-stakes, fluffy story with a cute premise and don't mind a plot that goes off the rails, you might find some enjoyment here. But be warned: the initial charm fades, the plot becomes muddled, and the ending takes a strange, darker turn. Proceed with caution, and maybe lower your expectations a bit. I'd give it a tentative 3/5 stars.
