My Thoughts on Unconscious
"Unconscious" is a novel that truly surprised me. With its unique premise blending comedy, drama, fantasy, romance, and xianxia, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But from the moment I dove in, I found myself captivated by the story and its complex characters.
First Impressions
Initially, the novel's description felt a bit confusing, and the early chapters required some patience as the world and its mechanics were established. However, I quickly realized that this initial confusion was well worth pushing through. The core concept of reliving the past through dreams that subtly alter reality is fascinating and executed with impressive skill.
What Works Well
The strength of "Unconscious" lies in its characters, particularly the female lead, Huang Rang. I found her to be a nuanced and compelling figure, driven by a desire for revenge and a need to carve out a better life for herself. Her pragmatism and cleverness, shaped by a difficult past, make her both admirable and relatable. I especially appreciated how her relationships, especially with the male lead, Di Yiqiu, fostered genuine character growth. Their love story isn't one of instant infatuation but rather a gradual and believable connection built on mutual respect and understanding.
Di Yiqiu himself is a delightful character. He's not the typical overbearing male lead, but rather a supportive and earnest partner who sees and appreciates Huang Rang for who she truly is. Their interactions are often funny and heartwarming, providing a welcome contrast to the more angsty elements of the plot.
The plot itself is intricately woven, with each dream sequence adding layers of mystery and intrigue. I was consistently impressed by the author's ability to maintain suspense and deliver unexpected twists, keeping me fully invested in the story's outcome. The world-building is also well-developed, creating a rich and immersive xianxia setting.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed "Unconscious," I did find the final battle and the reveal of the main villain to be somewhat confusing. Additionally, I would have liked to see a bit more emphasis on the romantic development between the main characters in the earlier parts of the story. Also, one reviewer found the age gap in the third dream unsettling.
