My Thoughts on Creating Heavenly Laws
"Creating Heavenly Laws" is a wild ride of cultivation, sci-fi, and dimension-hopping that definitely scratched an itch for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s got a certain charm that kept me reading.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the premise. An underdog protagonist with a cheat ability to travel to other worlds to get stronger? Sign me up! The early chapters threw me right into the action, and I was eager to see how Lin Yuan would develop his powers and navigate these new environments. The blend of sci-fi elements with classic cultivation tropes felt fresh, and I appreciated the fast-paced storytelling.
What Works Well
The world-hopping aspect is undoubtedly a major strength. Each new world offers unique opportunities for Lin Yuan to learn and grow, and I enjoyed seeing how he adapted to different cultivation systems and challenges. The author does a decent job of power scaling, consistently raising the stakes and introducing new concepts to keep things interesting. I also appreciated the relatively quick pace. The story doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary details, and Lin Yuan is constantly progressing, which makes for an engaging read. The translation quality is also solid, making it easy to immerse myself in the story.
Areas of Concern
While the fast pace is a positive, it also leads to some shallowness. I found the characters, including the MC, to be a bit flat. Lin Yuan, while powerful, often felt emotionally detached, and I struggled to connect with him on a deeper level. The "real world" sections, particularly after Lin Yuan returns from his first world, felt less compelling than the otherworld adventures. The face-slapping and reliance on tropes in the real world segments definitely dragged down the story's overall quality. Some of the worlds, while initially intriguing, started to feel a bit samey after a while, lacking the unique flavor that would have made them truly memorable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the MC spends a very long time in other worlds but that the author skips the majority of the time and focuses on the "real world," which is a turn-off for them.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Creating Heavenly Laws" is an enjoyable, albeit somewhat shallow, power fantasy. If you're looking for a lighthearted, fast-paced read with an overpowered protagonist and don't mind a lack of emotional depth, this novel might be right up your alley. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5. It's not going to win any awards for literary brilliance, but it's a fun way to kill some time.
