My Thoughts on This Husband Is Frail And Weak

"This Husband Is Frail And Weak" is a novel I initially hesitated to pick up, but I'm incredibly glad I did. It's a blend of adventure, fantasy, historical elements, mystery, and romance with a strong yaoi pairing, set in ancient China. The story follows a protagonist who transmigrates into a sickly character tasked by a system to aid the original protagonist in becoming emperor. However, the MC decides to become a salted fish, and this leads to a journey filled with intrigue, romance, and surprisingly tender moments.

First Impressions

I was immediately drawn in by the unique premise of a "salted fish" protagonist determined to avoid the original plot. The initial chapters set a good pace, introducing the main characters and the world they inhabit. The comedic undertones balanced the heavier themes of betrayal and political maneuvering, making it an enjoyable read from the start.

What Works Well

The strength of this novel lies in its character development and the intricate relationship between the MC and ML. The author masterfully explores their emotions and the evolution of their bond over three lifetimes. I particularly appreciated how the MC's moral compass remains consistent, guiding the initially vengeful ML towards a more compassionate path. The balance between slice-of-life moments and political intrigue is well-executed, preventing the story from becoming either too slow or too rushed. The side characters are also vividly written, adding depth and richness to the narrative.

Areas of Concern

While the story is largely satisfying, I felt that the ending was somewhat anticlimactic. The turning point of events is more narrative-driven, which might disappoint readers looking for a more action-packed resolution. Additionally, the MC's increasing reliance on the ML in the latter part of the story might not appeal to everyone, as it can make him seem overly dependent.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers might find the ML's initial reactions to the MC, including instances of near-strangulation, disturbing. While these actions are rooted in the ML's trauma and distrust, they can be off-putting and create a sense of unease. Additionally, the original protagonist's victim mentality and blame towards the MC are seen as illogical and frustrating by some readers.

Final Verdict

Despite some minor flaws, "This Husband Is Frail And Weak" is a beautifully written and captivating story. The well-developed characters, intriguing plot, and tender romance make it a worthwhile read. I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy slow-burn romances with a touch of political intrigue and a focus on character development. I give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
