My Thoughts on The Journey of Flower
"The Journey of Flower" is a xianxia novel that swept me away with its blend of humor, tragedy, and forbidden love. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, and while it might not be for the faint of heart, it's an experience I won't soon forget.
First Impressions
Initially, the story presents itself as a fairly lighthearted xianxia romp, focusing on Hua Qian'gu's journey as she becomes Bai Zihua's disciple. I found myself chuckling at her interactions and enjoying the introduction of various characters like the charismatic Demon Lord Sha Qianmo and the enigmatic Dongfang Yuqing. It felt like a classic coming-of-age story with a touch of the supernatural.
What Works Well
The novel truly shines in its exploration of love, sacrifice, and the clash between personal desires and worldly responsibilities. Hua Qian'gu's unwavering devotion to Bai Zihua, even in the face of immense suffering, is both admirable and heartbreaking. The second half of the book is where the narrative kicks into high gear. The plot becomes more complex, with higher stakes and deeper emotional resonance. The author masterfully weaves together elements of betrayal, redemption, and the consequences of one's choices. I especially loved the moral ambiguity surrounding Bai Zihua's character. His internal conflict between his love for Hua Qian'gu and his duty to the world creates a compelling dynamic that kept me hooked. The ending, while bittersweet, ultimately delivers a satisfying resolution to their tumultuous relationship.

The deaths of beloved characters like Tang Bao are genuinely devastating and fuel Hua Qian'gu's descent into becoming a Demon God. The curse she places on Bai Zihua is a moment of pure catharsis, even though it's born out of pain.
Final Verdict
Despite some of the darker themes and potentially frustrating character choices, I highly recommend "The Journey of Flower." It's a beautifully written and emotionally resonant story that explores the complexities of love, sacrifice, and the enduring power of the human spirit. If you're a fan of xianxia with a strong romantic subplot and don't mind a bit of angst, this is definitely a novel worth checking out.
