My Thoughts on Carrying A Lantern In Daylight
"Carrying A Lantern In Daylight" has been quite the journey. It's a story that pulls you in with its unique premise and keeps you hooked with its complex characters. While the synopsis might lead you to believe it's a lighthearted romp, prepare yourself for a deeply emotional experience.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a supernatural romance set against the backdrop of ancient China. The idea of a 400-year-old Ghost King falling for a charming military general felt fresh and intriguing. However, I quickly realized that this novel is much more than just a love story. It's a tale of humanity, mortality, and the lengths we go to for those we love.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters. He Simu, the Ghost King, is a fascinating character. She is seemingly cold and detached but also vulnerable and lonely. Duan Xu, the general, is equally compelling. He's intelligent, cunning, and deeply compassionate, willing to sacrifice everything for his people and for He Simu. Their relationship is beautifully written, a slow burn that's both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The author masterfully explores their differences and similarities, creating a bond that transcends life and death.
The world-building is also noteworthy. The story seamlessly blends political intrigue, warfare, and supernatural elements, creating a rich and immersive world. The writing style is beautiful and descriptive, painting vivid pictures in my mind. I also have to commend the translator for their exceptional work, which made the reading experience smooth and enjoyable.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I did find the ending to be a bit rushed. It felt like the author was in a hurry to tie up loose ends, and some of the resolutions felt unearned. Additionally, some side character arcs could have been explored more deeply.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution.
>!I was also disappointed by the deaths of Chen Ying and Fang Xianye. While I appreciated the complexities of their characters, their fates felt somewhat tragic and undeserved. The deus ex machina ending, where a deity intervenes to save the main couple, also felt a bit contrived and weakened the overall impact of the story.!<
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Carrying A Lantern In Daylight" is a captivating and emotionally resonant novel. The characters are well-developed, the plot is engaging, and the themes are thought-provoking. It's a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fantasy, romance, and stories with complex characters and bittersweet endings.
