My Thoughts on The Great Conqueror
"The Great Conqueror" is a web novel that throws you headfirst into a world of beastmen, cultivation, and a protagonist armed with modern knowledge. It's a wild ride that definitely has its high points, but also some quirks that might make you pause.
First Impressions
Initially, I found the world-building a bit overwhelming. The first few chapters are heavy on exposition, and the unique names for races can be hard to keep straight. However, if you power through that initial info dump, the story starts to pick up speed. The premise of a gamer/engineer reincarnated as a "brainless" bearman is intriguing, and I was curious to see how he'd use his knowledge to rise above expectations.
What Works Well
The protagonist is a major draw. He's not your typical hot-blooded, arrogant MC. Instead, he uses his intellect and cunning to navigate challenges. I also appreciated that the story isn't solely focused on his individual growth. The supporting characters get their time to shine, and the relationships feel more developed than in many similar novels. The action sequences, especially those within the "spirit world," are exciting and showcase the MC's primal side.
Areas of Concern
While the fast pace keeps things interesting, it sometimes sacrifices believability. Some plot points feel rushed or convenient, and I occasionally struggled to reconcile the protagonist's modern knowledge with his instant mastery of new skills. Also, the translation could use some polish. There were instances where the punctuation and phrasing felt awkward, which detracted from my immersion in the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out the novel borrows heavily from familiar tropes and plotlines found in other xianxia and xuanhuan stories. The MC's background, the harem setup, and the predictable roles of supporting characters can feel derivative at times. While these elements didn't completely ruin my enjoyment, I can see how they might bother readers looking for something truly original.
Final Verdict
"The Great Conqueror" is a fun, fast-paced read with an engaging protagonist and interesting world. While it suffers from some pacing issues, translation quirks, and reliance on familiar tropes, its strengths outweigh its weaknesses. If you're looking for a lighthearted xuanhuan novel with a focus on action and character development, this might be right up your alley. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
