Who it's for, and whether it holds up.
My Thoughts on The Glory After Rebirth
"The Glory After Rebirth" is quite the journey, a sprawling historical fantasy BL novel that had me hooked initially, then wavering, and eventually, somewhat satisfied. It's a story of rebirth, revenge, political intrigue, and, of course, romance. With over 500 chapters, it's a commitment, and whether it's a worthwhile one seems to depend heavily on your tolerance for certain tropes and pacing.
First Impressions
I have to admit, the beginning was strong. The protagonist (MC), armed with knowledge from his past life, was clever and engaging. I enjoyed watching him navigate challenges and outsmart his enemies. The warm family dynamic was also a major draw. However, like many others, I felt a shift when the male lead (ML) entered the scene.
What Works Well
Despite my initial reservations, the story does find its footing. The political schemes and world-building become increasingly intricate and captivating. The author weaves a complex web of relationships and power struggles that kept me invested, especially after the MC and ML arrive in the capital. Many readers found the later arcs more compelling, as the reasons behind the MC's rebirth are revealed and the ML's character develops beyond the "perfect, cold" archetype. I agree that the MC's growth, though gradual, is rewarding, and the relationship between the two leads eventually evolves into a supportive and loving partnership. The author is great at cliffhangers and sprinkling in sweet moments throughout the story.
Areas of Concern
The ML's initial portrayal is a major sticking point. Some found his actions disrespectful and overbearing, particularly his early interactions with the MC. I can see how this could be off-putting, as the MC's initial strong character seems to diminish in his presence. The pacing can also be slow, with what some consider unnecessary details. This is a long novel, and it demands patience. Also, the translation pay wall may be an issue for some readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned that the MC's initial prejudice against the ML stems from misunderstandings based on his past life. It's also revealed that the MC's rebirth is tied to his mother's clan. The couple eventually adopts three children.
Final Verdict
"The Glory After Rebirth" is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance, particularly in its intricate plot and character development, but it also suffers from pacing issues and a potentially problematic ML. If you're willing to persevere through the initial hurdles and enjoy a long, detailed story with political intrigue and a slow-burn romance, this might be for you. However, if you're easily turned off by overbearing leads or slow pacing, you might want to proceed with caution. I'd recommend giving it a chance past the first 100 chapters before making a final decision. I'd give it a tentative 3.5/5.
