My Thoughts on Tempered Immortal

"Tempered Immortal" is a xianxia novel I approached with a mix of excitement and trepidation, mainly because of its sheer length. Clocking in at over 4000 chapters, it's a commitment! After diving in, I've formed a pretty solid opinion, and it's a bit of a mixed bag.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a protagonist who can refine and recycle what others deem trash. It felt like a fresh take, a chance for a clever MC to outwit his opponents. The early chapters focus heavily on cultivation and pill refining, which some might find slow. It does take a while for any real plot to emerge beyond the MC's drive for self-improvement.

What Works Well

The protagonist, Lin Xuan, is a major point of contention, but I personally found his calm and cautious nature refreshing. He's not the typical hot-headed xianxia protagonist. He's intelligent, resourceful, and, crucially, keeps a low profile. He doesn't rush into conflicts, and when forced to fight, he's ruthless and efficient. I also appreciate that his power-ups, while frequent, often come with a cost or are the result of his own hard work and ingenuity. The world-building, while not always the primary focus, is solid enough to support the narrative.

Areas of Concern

One of my biggest issues, and something I noticed many readers echoed, is the pacing. The story can get bogged down in excessive exposition, with lengthy descriptions and internal monologues that interrupt the flow. Conversations can be drawn out, and sometimes entire plotlines feel irrelevant to the overall story. I also found myself questioning the MC's intelligence at times. While he's supposed to be cautious, he often throws himself into dangerous situations and makes enemies out of people far stronger than himself. It feels contradictory to his supposedly careful nature. Also, the side characters don't get enough attention.

Final Verdict

"Tempered Immortal" has potential, but it's hampered by pacing issues and inconsistencies in the MC's character. If you're a fan of slow-burn cultivation stories with a focus on detail, you might find something to enjoy here. However, be prepared for a long and sometimes repetitive journey. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for classic xianxia tropes and slow pacing.

Synopsis

A young man with no spiritual roots. A person who is thought of as tr*sh by others. He constantly acquires various items thought of as waste by the cultivation world. No matter if it is garbage pills or useless materials, he will take them all!
