My Thoughts on Swallowed Star
"Swallowed Star" is quite the ride, a blend of familiar xianxia tropes with a post-apocalyptic sci-fi twist. I went in expecting a standard cultivation story, but I found something that, while not perfect, kept me entertained.
First Impressions
The initial setup is intriguing: Earth in the near future, ravaged by a virus that mutated animals and plants, forcing humanity into fortified cities. Our protagonist, Luo Feng, comes from humble beginnings, a hard-working student with a disabled brother. This underdog story immediately grabbed my attention. The early volumes, focused on monster hunting and squad tactics, felt grounded and exciting.
What Works Well
Luo Feng himself is a major draw. He's not a generic, arrogant protagonist. He's sensible, rational, and actually works hard for his power. I appreciate that he isn't trying to build a harem. The fight scenes are well-paced and engaging, avoiding the endless repetition I've seen in other novels. I also enjoyed the unique blend of modern technology and cultivation techniques. Seeing Luo Feng utilize advanced armor, AI, and telekinesis in battle was a refreshing change. Many readers praised the novel for its seamless integration of these elements. Also, the fact that IET doesn't shy away from creating massive universes for the MC to traverse is a great point in the novel's favor.
Areas of Concern
The pacing can be inconsistent. Some readers found the early chapters slow, focusing too much on slice-of-life elements. Others felt that the story progresses exponentially after the first few volumes. I also noticed a recurring criticism about the power scaling. The "leveling up" system seems to become arbitrary as the story progresses, with Luo Feng consistently fighting opponents far above his supposed level. Several readers mentioned the dialogue and writing quality as being somewhat lacking.

Some readers have expressed disappointment with the direction the story takes after the initial Earth arc. The plot expands to a galactic scale, introducing familiar cultivation cliches like tournaments, auctions, and "old geezer" mentors. Also, the characters that aren't the MC don't get a huge amount of character development.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I found "Swallowed Star" to be an enjoyable read. The unique setting, likeable protagonist, and exciting action sequences kept me engaged. While the pacing and power scaling issues might deter some, the overall story is compelling. I'd recommend this novel to fans of xianxia and sci-fi who are looking for a fresh take on familiar tropes. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
