My Thoughts on Secretly Holding Hands with You Behind Our Friends’ Back. Falling in Love That Cannot Be Told to Anyone
This title is a mouthful, but don't let that deter you. "Secretly Holding Hands..." is a completed Japanese light novel that I've been following the translation of, and so far, I'm finding it a compelling read. The premise is intriguing: a love that must be hidden, set against the backdrop of close friendships. The drama! The angst! It's got my attention.
First Impressions
From the get-go, the story grabbed me. The initial chapters do a solid job of establishing the main character's worldview and the reasons behind it. He's not just some random dude; he has a history that shapes his perspective on love and friendship. The female lead is equally compelling, with her own set of motivations and desires. I appreciate that the author takes the time to develop these characters and their contrasting ideologies. The plot feels fresh, and the writing is a cut above the average.
What Works Well
The core of the story lies in the exploration of friendship versus romance. I find myself invested in the characters' journeys as they grapple with these conflicting emotions. The slow burn between the main characters is well-executed, and their interactions are captivating. The author also isn't afraid to delve into the messier aspects of relationships, which makes the story feel more realistic, even if the characters aren't always the most wholesome. The characters are all interesting, and by the time I saw all their wrong decisions and reach the end, I had a hard time telling which one I hated the least. That is not a bad thing!
Areas of Concern
While I'm enjoying the novel, it's not without its flaws. The characters are not innocent, and become pretty warped by the time you reach the conclusion. Of course, the main message being how deformed love can get, there is no problem with this. However, I personally had a hard time relating with this "love".
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find certain plot points and character decisions questionable. The ending may feel a bit anti-climactic.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Secretly Holding Hands..." is a worthwhile read if you enjoy drama, psychological themes, and a romance that isn't always sunshine and roses. The characters are complex, the plot is engaging, and the writing is solid. It's a story that will make you think about the nature of love, friendship, and the choices we make. I'd recommend giving it a shot.
