My Thoughts on Ore wa Souseki wo Shiranai ~Itsu no Ma ni ka Kanojo ga Dekitemashita~
This web novel's title might be a mouthful, but I dove in hoping for some lighthearted romance, and I wasn't entirely disappointed. It's definitely a story that knows what it is: a rom-com with a dense protagonist navigating the treacherous waters of high school love.
First Impressions
Initially, I was charmed by the simplicity of it all. The early chapters set up a classic scenario: a clueless guy seemingly stumbling into a relationship. There's a certain appeal to the "how will he figure it out?" suspense that kept me turning the page. The translation also felt smooth, and I appreciated the translator keeping some Japanese terms intact with helpful notes.
What Works Well
The comedy is a definite strong point. The misunderstandings and the protagonist's obliviousness create some genuinely funny moments. I also found myself invested in the relationships between the characters. Even with the potential for a harem situation, the interactions felt interesting enough to keep me engaged, and I'm curious to see how the dynamic evolves. The story has a certain "fluff" factor, making it an easy and enjoyable read when I just want something light.
Areas of Concern
However, it's not all sunshine and roses. The protagonist's density, while initially amusing, can become frustrating. There were times when I wanted to shake him and tell him to pay attention to what's happening around him! Also, the "going with the flow" attitude of the MC might not be for everyone.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be put off by the potential for yandere elements and the way the protagonist handles conflict, particularly concerning a past relationship. One user pointed out a specific situation where the MC makes some questionable decisions and jumps to conclusions, which might make him seem spineless to some.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Ore wa Souseki wo Shiranai ~Itsu no Ma ni ka Kanojo ga Dekitemashita~" is a fun, albeit flawed, rom-com. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with some funny misunderstandings and don't mind a dense protagonist, this might be right up your alley. However, be warned that some plot points and character traits might not appeal to all readers. I'll keep reading to see where the story goes, but I'm going in with tempered expectations.
