My Thoughts on Next Door There’s Memeda

"Next Door There’s Memeda" promised a cute and fluffy yuri romance, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting a lighthearted read, and while there were a few hiccups, I mostly enjoyed my time with this story of a writer and her devoted fan.

First Impressions

The premise immediately grabbed me: a popular online writer finding love with her number one fan, who also happens to be her neighbor. It's a setup ripe with comedic potential and heartwarming moments, and the initial chapters definitely capitalized on that. The story introduces us to Ling Xiao Xiao, a writer with a cool online persona, and Jiang Shuang, a voice actress who's sweet and a little shy.

What Works Well

The strongest aspect of this novel is its sheer cuteness. Many readers, including myself, found the interactions between Ling Xiao Xiao and Jiang Shuang incredibly endearing. The translator deserves major kudos for tackling the heavy dose of Chinese internet slang. Without the explanations, I would have been totally lost. The translator did a fantastic job of keeping me from being completely lost. The story is a short and sweet read, perfect for when you want something light and fluffy.

Areas of Concern

While I mostly enjoyed the story, there were a few elements that gave me pause. I can see how some readers might be put off by the age gap between the two main characters. While it's not huge, the difference in their life stages – one starting college, the other seemingly finishing – creates a slight imbalance. Also, the plot can be confusing at times, which may make it harder to grasp the overall story.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Okay, let's talk about something that might be a spoiler. Some readers felt that Jiang Shuang's feelings for Ling Xiao Xiao felt more like admiration for her writing than genuine romantic love. There's also a plot point involving Jiang Shuang's family trauma that some found contrived. I personally didn't have a huge issue with these elements, but they're worth noting for potential readers.

Final Verdict

Overall, "Next Door There’s Memeda" is a charming and enjoyable yuri story, especially if you're looking for something short, sweet, and fluffy. Just be prepared for some potentially confusing cultural references and a slight age gap dynamic that might not appeal to everyone. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for a lighthearted romance with a healthy dose of internet humor.
