My Thoughts on My Previous Job was as a Hero…

This title certainly grabbed my attention with its lengthy premise! After diving in, I've found myself with mixed feelings, reflecting the varied opinions I've seen floating around. It’s a story with definite strengths, but also some aspects that might not appeal to every reader.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the setup. A hero, discarded and betrayed, now trying to live a normal life as a college student, only to be pulled back into the fray? It has potential. The blend of fantasy action with a slice-of-life school setting is interesting. However, I quickly found myself questioning the protagonist's reactions to his circumstances.

What Works Well

There are elements that I genuinely enjoyed. The world-building seems well-crafted, and the magic system is interesting. Some appreciate the detailed character backgrounds and how they develop throughout the series, feeling that the author has put clear thought into the world and its inhabitants. I also appreciate the balance between everyday life and fantasy battles, making the story easy to read. There are many appealing female characters which is a plus.

Areas of Concern

My biggest issue lies with the protagonist himself. His passivity and willingness to be a doormat frustrated me. I struggled to understand his motivations and found his relationships, particularly with the saint and his ex-girlfriend, to be somewhat rushed and unconvincing. The humor sometimes relies on the protagonist being treated poorly, which I didn't find particularly funny. It felt like the story was using his suffering for cheap laughs, which detracted from my enjoyment. The plot itself can be predictable.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have pointed out that the characters often treat the MC badly, and his former party never apologize to him for the way they hurt him. This lack of remorse, combined with the MC's continued willingness to help them, creates a frustrating dynamic. It's also mentioned that the MC is often led around by other characters, with little agency of his own, which can make him feel like a puppet.

Final Verdict

Overall, My Previous Job was as a Hero… is a mixed bag. While the world-building, action sequences, and character development of side characters have their merits, the protagonist's personality and the often frustrating treatment he receives significantly detract from the experience. If you're looking for a story with a strong, proactive lead, this might not be for you. However, if you can tolerate a more passive protagonist and enjoy a blend of fantasy action and slice-of-life elements, it might be worth a try. I'd give it a cautious 3/5.

Synopsis

Yamamoto Yuusuke, a former hero from another world, now lived his days as an ordinary humanities college student. After defeating the Demon Lord, all that awaited him were the painful separation from the princess and monotonous daily life. His once mighty powers now seemed pointless and devoid of purpose. The glory of his past had faded away, leaving Yuusuke with a mundane existence. One day, everything changed when she appeared before him. It was an encounter with Lisha, the saint of the otherworld “Asteris,” that would reshape Yuusuke’s world. With the help of his ex-girlfriend, a magician, and former comrades, the Second War of the Gods and Demons, which would decide the fate of the world after the Demon Lord’s death, began. Whose sake would the sword he once again wield be swung for? The once-rusty hero rises once more. “So, please. Would you protect me as my knight?” “I refuse.”
