My Thoughts on Returnee from Another World

"Returnee from Another World" is definitely a novel that evokes strong reactions. Diving in, I found myself grappling with its morally ambiguous protagonist and the somewhat disturbing scenarios he navigates. It's a story that's hard to put down, but not always for the best reasons.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a man returns from a brutal isekai adventure with his powers intact, landing not where he intended in the timeline. The potential for a dark revenge story was definitely there. However, the early chapters are jarring. The main character's actions are questionable, to say the least, especially concerning his childhood friend. It's a bold start, but one that might alienate some readers immediately.

What Works Well

Despite the initial shock, there are some compelling elements. The world-building, though not always at the forefront, hints at a deeper plot. The protagonist's internal struggles, however twisted, add a layer of complexity. I found myself drawn to the mystery surrounding his memory gaps and the feeling that he's fighting against a predetermined fate. The story hints at something larger at play, and that's what kept me reading. Some appreciate the wish-fulfillment aspect, but the narrative's strength lies in its hints of a more intricate plot.

Areas of Concern

My biggest issue is the protagonist himself. While some might find his ruthless nature appealing, I struggled to connect with him. His motivations often feel flimsy, and his actions towards women are frequently unsettling. While the author seems to be attempting a morally grey character, he often veers into outright unlikeable territory. The plot holes related to the protagonist's memory gaps also feel like convenient plot devices, undermining the weight of his actions.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Several reviewers pointed out specific instances of the protagonist's disturbing behavior. The use of a "sx savery slime" on his childhood friend is a major point of contention. Additionally, his manipulation of a masochistic woman's religious beliefs and exploiting her daughter's illness for his own gain are difficult to stomach. These actions paint a picture of a character who is not just flawed, but actively harmful.

Final Verdict

"Returnee from Another World" is a mixed bag. It has moments of intriguing plot development and a unique premise, but it's weighed down by a problematic protagonist and questionable content. If you're looking for a morally challenging story with dark themes and aren't easily offended, it might be worth a try. However, be prepared for a potentially uncomfortable and disturbing read. Proceed with caution.

Synopsis

At the age of 25, Kaburagi Shuu was transported to another world. However, he was not like the hero of the story but he still has an advantage. Despite his advantages, for some reason he had no memory of meeting God, nor did he play any role to do anything. He just survived in a harsh world. Then, eight years passed, and Shuu finally returned back. However, it was not the day when he was 25 years old, but the day when he was still 17 years old. Now, having been changed by the experience in another world, Shuu decides to live unrestrainedly in his original world…
