My Thoughts on My Boyfriend Is the Heartthrob, and I’m Just a Passerby
"My Boyfriend Is the Heartthrob, and I’m Just a Passerby" is a wild ride, and I mean that in the best way possible. Going in, I was expecting a fluffy romance with a slightly unhinged male lead, but what I got was so much more. This story masterfully blends genres, creating a unique and unsettling experience that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
First Impressions
The synopsis is intentionally misleading, and I appreciated that. It sets you up for a typical campus romance, but the story quickly descends into psychological horror territory. There's an undercurrent of unease from the very beginning, a sense that something is not quite right. The author's writing style is engaging, using short sentences to drive the plot forward and longer sentences to add depth to the characters.
What Works Well
The relationship between the MC and ML is the heart of the story. The ML is a crazy, powerful being who is absolutely obsessed with the MC. Despite the power imbalance, he's portrayed as almost puppy-like in his devotion. The MC, on the other hand, is calm and collected, seemingly unfazed by the horrors around him. Their dynamic is fascinating, and I found myself rooting for them despite all the red flags.
I also loved the world-building. The author creates a creepy and unsettling atmosphere, filling the world with monsters and horrors that are both terrifying and intriguing. The plot twists are well-executed, and the story keeps you guessing until the very end.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk spoilers. The core of the story is that the MC is narrating a campus romance while we're actually experiencing a psychological horror/thriller. Once the MC and ML are together, they forcefully portray a campus romance. The ML is an eldrich monster and the main villain in this story, but he's a puppy dog for MC. The breakup makes him reflect on his own actions and tries to be a better version of himself. The MC chose to go back in time so that their first meeting is more special, rather than let ML go. The horror is that the entire world is filled with horror and monsters.
Final Verdict
Despite its short length, "My Boyfriend Is the Heartthrob, and I’m Just a Passerby" is a memorable and thought-provoking read. The blend of horror, romance, and psychological elements creates a unique and engaging experience. If you're looking for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat while also making you swoon, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for things to get weird.
