My Thoughts on Mermaid Effect
"Mermaid Effect" is definitely a wild ride, a dark and twisted journey that left me both intrigued and slightly disturbed. This isn't your typical fairytale mermaid romance; it's a blend of sci-fi, horror, and psychological thriller with a yaoi twist, and it pulls no punches.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this wouldn't be a lighthearted read. The tags alone – abusive characters, cannibalism, amnesia – hinted at the darkness to come. What surprised me, though, was the unique setting. The story unfolds primarily in America, with characters bearing Western names, which is a refreshing change from many web novels in this genre.
What Works Well
The world-building is compelling, especially the portrayal of the merfolk. There's no romanticized version here; instead, we get a raw, sometimes grotesque depiction of these creatures. The plot is a tangled web of interconnected mysteries, and I found myself constantly trying to piece everything together. The author does a great job of creating suspense and keeping you on the edge of your seat. I also appreciated the depth of the characters, each with their own motivations, psychological issues, and secrets. The MC's journey, though fraught with tragedy, is compelling as he grows and finds his courage. The ML, though unconventional, is endearing in his own way. I also really enjoyed the unique plot and the many twists and turns that kept me guessing.
Areas of Concern
The sheer amount of trauma the MC endures can feel overwhelming at times. Kidnapping, torture, memory loss, and a host of other horrific events pile up, and it almost becomes desensitizing. I also noticed that the romance takes a backseat to the plot, so if you're primarily looking for a love story, you might be disappointed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers found the ending to be abrupt or even sad, while others interpreted it as a happy ending. The fate of Munster, the ML, is particularly debated, with some feeling his death was tragic. There are also some very dark and disturbing scenes, including a r*pe scene, which some readers found unnecessary and gratuitous.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Mermaid Effect" is a unique and engaging novel that's not for the faint of heart. If you're looking for a dark, suspenseful story with complex characters and a twisted plot, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions and some potentially disturbing content. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
