My Thoughts on The Little Merman
"The Little Merman" promised a fluffy, easy read, and for the most part, it delivered. This yaoi novel blends fantasy and drama in a world where a little merman finds himself entangled with a human celebrity. While it wasn't without its flaws, I found myself charmed by the characters and the overall lightheartedness of the story.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a cute and fluffy romance. The idea of an insecure little fish gradually gaining confidence as his career blossoms was definitely appealing. The premise of the MC naively stealing the ML's belongings was quirky and endearing. I was ready for a heartwarming tale, and for a good portion of the novel, that's exactly what I got.
What Works Well
The sheer adorableness of the main character is a major selling point. Many readers, including myself, found the MC to be incredibly cute, making it easy to root for him. The "doting love interest" trope is also well-executed, with the ML's affection adding to the overall sweetness of the story. I also appreciated the hints of underlying darkness, which added depth without overshadowing the lighthearted tone. The family dynamic, especially the interactions with the children, was another highlight, providing plenty of heartwarming moments.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, there were a few elements that gave me pause. The ML's sudden shift into a "mafia boss" type felt jarring and out of place. It raised questions about the legality of his actions and created inconsistencies within the narrative. I also found the cousin of the MC to be extremely annoying, his constant interference got old fast. Some also found the ML's disbelief in the MC to be annoying. The fact that he monitors every movement of MC and even secretly dig MC secrets + crossing many MC rules is just too much.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's dive into some spoiler-y territory. Several readers expressed disappointment with certain plot points, such as the time skip during the MC's pregnancy. While I understand the desire to witness those emotional moments, I can also see why the author chose to skip over them.
Final Verdict
Despite its imperfections, "The Little Merman" is an enjoyable read for those seeking a fluffy and heartwarming story. The cute characters, doting love interest, and family dynamics make it a delightful experience. While the inconsistencies in the plot and character behavior can be frustrating at times, they don't detract too much from the overall enjoyment. If you're looking for a lighthearted escape with a touch of fantasy and romance, this novel is worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
