My Thoughts on Looking Over at the Guy Across the Way
"Looking Over at the Guy Across the Way" is a delightful and surprisingly spicy read that I breezed through in a couple of sittings. It's a modern BL romance centered around apartment life, a proactive MC, and a seemingly innocent but secretly capable ML. Overall, I found it to be a fun and engaging story, perfect for when you need something sweet and a little bit naughty.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was hooked by the premise. A thirsty MC shamelessly pursuing his handsome new neighbor? Sign me up! The initial chapters are filled with humorous antics as Chen Xiao attempts to woo Gu MengYang. It's light, fluffy, and sets the stage for a charming relationship to blossom. The translation is also excellent, making it an easy and enjoyable read.
What Works Well
The dynamic between the MC and ML is the heart of this story, and it works incredibly well. Chen Xiao's forwardness is refreshing, especially in a genre where the shou is often portrayed as passive. Gu MengYang, despite his initial shyness, is far from a pushover, and I loved seeing his possessive side emerge as the story progressed. Many will appreciate the balance between relationship development, humor, and explicit content. The smut scenes are definitely a highlight, adding a considerable amount of heat to the already sweet narrative. The supporting characters, including the family members, are also very supportive of the couple's coming out.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be put off by a particular plot point: Gu MengYang initially hesitates to accept Chen Xiao's confession, running off to seek his parents' permission. While this is eventually addressed, it can feel frustrating in the moment.
Areas of Concern
While I mostly enjoyed the side couple's story, I can see why some found it rushed or even problematic. The power dynamics in their relationship are a little questionable, and the development feels less organic than the main pairing. I also found the angst to be a bit unnecessary at times. While it does add some depth to the characters, I feel it could have been handled with more finesse.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor drawbacks, "Looking Over at the Guy Across the Way" is a highly enjoyable read. It's a sweet, funny, and smutty story with a heartwarming romance at its core. If you're looking for a lighthearted BL novel with a proactive MC, a lovable ML, and plenty of spice, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for some serious sugar overload!
