Author profile

Time loop stories live or die by whether each iteration actually changes something. "Listen to God" gets this right. Every regression reveals new information, shifts the dynamic between Lin Shangci and Gu Chong, and tightens the mystery rather than just replaying the same beats. The fear of repetition doesn't materialize.

The romance is where the story earns its 4.5. It develops alongside the mystery rather than competing with it, and the pacing is patient without being slow. Lin Shangci and Gu Chong feel like real people working toward each other, not narrative functions. The thriller elements stay tense, the plot twists land, and the balance between the genre registers is handled with more skill than you'd normally expect.

Two smaller criticisms: Lin Shangci's reactions to the early regressions are a bit shallow, played for confusion more than genuine disorientation. She settles into a more interesting character as the story progresses, but the opening asks you to wait for her. Gu Chong also gets less backstory than she deserves, particularly about her family. There's a depth suggested by her behavior that the story doesn't fully cash out.

This is a well-constructed GL mystery with strong female leads and a romance that doesn't shortcut emotional work. It's not a hidden gem exactly, the adaptation attention means it has a readership, but it deserves more. One of the better examples of time-loop fiction in this space.

Synopsis

A high budget martial arts drama called “Magnificent” has taken the summer by storm. Gu Chong, a C-list actress who plays Yan Ruyu in the drama, finally skyrockets to fame in the entertainment industry after years of hard work. At the celebration banquet for “Magnificent” on August 26th, she meets Lin Shangci, the screenwriter she’s been curious about for a long time. She appears more ordinary and pure than she imagined, like an observer floating above the world, or flitting at its edges… The usually reclusive Lin Shangci finds herself awkwardly seeking help from her mentor and junior when faced with actors coming to toast her. What seemed like a brief encounter over a drink turns into a love story bound by the red thread of fate. After the banquet, Lin Shangci returns home, only to find her phone bombarded with messages from a gossip group. A group member shouts, “Gu Chong’s car exploded right in front of me, and everyone inside is dead!” The ticking seconds devour the present until the chime of midnight sounds. Lin Shangci falls asleep, dreamless, until her alarm wakes her in the morning. As she opens her eyes, she sees the date on her phone screen: July 24th. She had returned. A tale of the reclusive screenwriter Lin Shangci and the C-list actress Gu Chong.
