My Thoughts on I’m No Longer Human After Being Blacklisted
This novel took me on a wild ride, and while I enjoyed parts of the journey, I can definitely see why the overall rating sits where it does. "I’m No Longer Human After Being Blacklisted" is a story that blends genres with an MC who reinvents himself as a seafood chef after leaving the entertainment industry. It's a premise packed with potential, but the execution left me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the unique setup. A disgraced celebrity turned chef, using otherworldly ingredients? Sign me up! The early chapters, focusing on Li Jiu's culinary adventures and his interactions with customers, were charming and held a lot of promise. There's a certain appeal to reading about someone rebuilding their life and finding success in unexpected ways.
What Works Well
The world-building is undeniably a strong point. The introduction of different species and the gradual unfolding of the sci-fi elements were intriguing. The food descriptions are so vivid that I found myself craving seafood throughout my reading experience. Li Jiu himself is also a likeable character. I appreciated his resilience and how he stood up for himself. The novel shines in its ability to create a world that is both familiar and fantastical, and the initial focus on Li Jiu's journey of self-discovery is compelling.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel falters as it progresses. The plot becomes increasingly chaotic, throwing in elements of apocalypse, monster hunting, and super powers. The shift in genre felt jarring and disconnected from the initial premise. The romance, while present, felt somewhat forced and unbalanced. I felt that the Male Lead was given too much focus, overshadowing the MC's journey and development. The system's blatant favoritism towards the ML felt unearned and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several plot points later in the story contribute to the disappointment. The shift from restaurant management to monster fighting, the ML gaining a system of his own, and the perception that the MC is being sidelined all contribute to the feeling that the story loses its way.
Final Verdict
"I’m No Longer Human After Being Blacklisted" is a novel with a lot of potential that ultimately falls short. The strong world-building and likeable MC are positives, but the chaotic plot, unbalanced romance, and uneven pacing detract from the overall experience. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a unique premise and don't mind a story that veers off in unexpected directions, it might be worth a try. However, be prepared for a bumpy ride. I'd give it a 3.5/5.
