My Thoughts on Opening a Shop in the Nightmare World
"Opening a Shop in the Nightmare World" hooked me with its intriguing premise: a shopkeeper navigating terrifying realms to sell supernatural wares. The blend of horror, adventure, and business management felt fresh, and I dove in eager to see how it played out. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable read, though not without its shortcomings.
First Impressions
The initial world-building is fantastic. The nightmare worlds are vividly imagined, and the item descriptions are captivating, making me want to explore every nook and cranny. I particularly enjoyed the unique twist of the MC acting as both an NPC and a trainer within the game-like setting. The blend of family politics with the survival horror elements added an unexpected layer of depth that kept me invested.
What Works Well
The protagonist, Su Zimo, is a compelling character. He's calm and clever, and I appreciated how his beauty was portrayed as both a blessing and a curse, creating interesting challenges for him. The story shines in its ability to create truly creepy and unsettling scenarios, blending supernatural horror with elements grounded in reality. It's a unique mix of Recettear and XXXHolic, as one reader aptly put it, and that combination really resonated with me.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, like many others, lies with the ending. It feels rushed and anticlimactic, as if the author was forced to wrap things up prematurely. I also found the shounen ai tag to be misleading. While there are subtle hints of attraction between the MC and the ML (Ghost Umbrella), the romance is barely present. If you're coming for a BL story, you might be disappointed. I felt that the story was perfectly fine without romance and would consider it to be Gen. I also noted that the novel only touches on the potential of the shop and is more focused on acquiring the items.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have noted that the ML is the Ghost Umbrella, and there are subtle hints of romance, such as the ML being protective of the MC and enjoying his scent. However, the romantic development is minimal.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Opening a Shop in the Nightmare World" is a worthwhile read, especially if you enjoy unique world-building, intriguing characters, and a plot-driven story with a touch of horror. Just be prepared for a rushed ending and don't go in expecting a significant romance. I'd still recommend giving it a shot, especially if you're a fan of the unlimited flow genre.
