My Thoughts on I Will Never Let You Go Even If I Die
This novel was definitely an experience. "I Will Never Let You Go Even If I Die" is a wild ride through horror, mystery, and a very, very complicated relationship. It's not for the faint of heart, and the tags are there for a reason – heed them!
First Impressions
Going into this, I knew it wouldn't be a fluffy romance. The tags screamed "dark" and "problematic," and they weren't lying. The initial chapters immediately pull you into a world of ghosts, gruesome deaths, and a protagonist, Jiang Jubai, who's thrown into the deep end. It's a bit disorienting, but in a way that makes you want to know more, even as you brace yourself for the worst.
What Works Well
The author excels at creating a truly terrifying atmosphere. The ghosts aren't just spooky; they're genuinely malevolent, and the story doesn't shy away from the gruesome details. Xu Luan, the male lead, is a fascinating character. He's not a "good" person by any stretch of the imagination, and the author does a great job of constantly reminding you of that. Just when you think he might be softening, he does something that reaffirms his true nature as a yandere ghost.
The mystery aspect is also well-crafted. I found myself constantly guessing what would happen next, and the plot twists kept me hooked. The side characters, especially Jiang Jubai's mother, add depth to the story. She felt like a real person, and her interactions with the protagonist were both funny and heartwarming.
Areas of Concern
While the dark themes are well-executed, they can be a bit much. The relationship between Jiang Jubai and Xu Luan is incredibly complex and, at times, disturbing. Some readers might find the dubcon and noncon elements difficult to stomach. Also, I can see how some might find Jiang Jubai's character frustrating. He doesn't undergo significant character development throughout the story, which might not appeal to all readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
I have to mention the ending. Xu Luan does die temporarily, but he comes back stronger than ever, and Jiang Jubai's family eventually accepts their relationship. If you're looking for a happy ending, rest assured that it's there, albeit a twisted one.
Final Verdict
"I Will Never Let You Go Even If I Die" is a compelling but challenging read. If you're a fan of dark themes, yandere characters, and complex relationships, you might find it as captivating as I did. However, be sure to read the tags and content warnings before diving in. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's a unique and memorable novel that I won't soon forget.
