My Thoughts on I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated (LN)
First Impressions
The premise of "I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated" is undeniably intriguing. A Japanese guy reincarnated as a sentient sword? I was immediately curious. The story follows his partnership with Fran, a young black cat beastkin, as they journey through a world brimming with classic fantasy tropes. It's a blend of action, adventure, and slice-of-life elements, and I went in hoping for a fun, lighthearted experience.
What Works Well
What I found most appealing was the dynamic between the sword (Master) and Fran. Their relationship is genuinely heartwarming, evolving into a sort of paternal bond. It's refreshing to see a partnership built on mutual respect and support. I also appreciated the pacing, which, while sometimes episodic, allows for ample exploration of the world and its challenges. The fight scenes, though frequent, were generally enjoyable, and the story does a good job of establishing that our duo isn't always the strongest around, which adds a layer of tension. There were times I was genuinely rooting for them, as they faced off against seemingly insurmountable odds.
Areas of Concern
Despite its strengths, I did find some aspects of the novel less compelling. The world-building, while present, sometimes felt a bit shallow, and some character motivations felt underdeveloped. Fran's near-constant eating habits, while initially amusing, grew tiresome after a while. And while the episodic nature of the story can be enjoyable, it sometimes felt like the overarching plot took a backseat. Some have also pointed out that the characters are often very black and white - either super nice or super evil - which can make the story feel a bit predictable.
Final Verdict
"I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated" is a decent read if you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy adventure with a heartwarming relationship at its core. It's not groundbreaking, but it offers an enjoyable escape into a world filled with magic, monsters, and plenty of curry. While it has its flaws, the charm of the main characters and the fun action sequences make it a worthwhile read for fans of the isekai genre.
