My Thoughts on I Returned to the Immortal’s Youth
I finally took the plunge and dove into "I Returned to the Immortal’s Youth," and I'm so glad I did! This xianxia novel, with its blend of fantasy, romance, and shounen ai, really grabbed my attention. While it has a few quirks, the overall experience was definitely a positive one.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a little hesitant. The non-linear storytelling, with flashbacks sprinkled throughout, felt a bit jarring at first. It took me a few chapters to find my footing and understand how the past connected to the present. The whole "enemies to lovers" dynamic also seemed a bit misleading at the beginning, as the "enemies" part felt more like misunderstandings rooted in the past.
What Works Well
Despite my initial reservations, I quickly became invested in the characters and the world. Yan Qing, the MC, is a delight – his carefree attitude and subtle wit made him incredibly likeable. Xie Shiyi, the ML, is the perfect foil, with his cold exterior hiding a playful side that only emerges around Yan Qing. Their interactions are genuinely funny and heartwarming.
I particularly enjoyed the plot's pacing and the intricate background intrigue. The author did a fantastic job of weaving together the past and present, gradually revealing secrets and building tension. The concept of "nightmares" and "demonseeds" added a unique layer to the world-building, exploring the darker aspects of human nature and even the gods.
The relationship between Yan Qing and Xie Shiyi is a standout. It's refreshing to see a couple who are equals from the start, supporting each other through thick and thin without resorting to possessiveness or unnecessary drama. Their communication, especially as the story progresses, is a breath of fresh air in a genre often plagued by misunderstandings.
Areas of Concern
The non-linear storytelling, while eventually rewarding, can be confusing at times. I sometimes struggled to keep track of the various timelines and their significance. Also, the resolution felt a little rushed, leaving me with a few unanswered questions.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that Yan Qing's cultivation seems almost irrelevant, as he often relies on his weapon to solve problems. While I agree that his cultivation could have been emphasized more, I didn't find it detracted significantly from the overall story. The ending, particularly the Demon God's vanishing act, also left me scratching my head a bit.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor flaws, "I Returned to the Immortal’s Youth" is a captivating read. The engaging characters, intriguing plot, and unique world-building make it a standout in the xianxia genre. I highly recommend it to fans of BL cultivation novels who are looking for a fresh and exciting story. I'm definitely adding this one to my list of favorites!
