My Thoughts on I Fell in Love with a Friend’s Girlfriend Whom I Hadn’t Seen in a Few Years, so I Decided to Take Her Away
Okay, so the title is… a lot. And honestly, after diving into this web novel, I Fell in Love with a Friend’s Girlfriend… lives up to the eyebrow-raising premise. It's definitely a unique experience, and not necessarily in a good way for everyone.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this was going to be a deep dive into some potentially controversial territory. The tags alone – adult, drama, harem, romance, slice of life, and a whole host of R-18 content – paint a pretty clear picture. I was prepared for a rollercoaster, and that’s definitely what I got. The initial setup is intriguing, if a bit… direct. The protagonist's infatuation is almost immediate, and the subsequent actions definitely escalate quickly.
What Works Well
Honestly, it's a bit tough to find shining beacons of brilliance here. I will say, the "slice of life" aspect does provide some grounding. There are moments of genuine connection between the characters, despite the… unusual circumstances. The author attempts to explore the complexities of relationships, albeit through a very specific and arguably problematic lens. There's an attempt at character development, even if that development feels rushed or unconvincing at times. The writing itself is competent, making it easy to read.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the female lead. I struggled to understand her motivations and actions. Her decisions felt inconsistent and, at times, completely baffling. It's hard to root for a character when you can't grasp their reasoning. Furthermore, the rapid escalation of the relationship felt forced and lacked the necessary build-up to feel believable. The harem elements, while expected given the genre, felt tacked on and underdeveloped, further diluting the already thin character development. The whole scenario hinges on questionable consent and ethical boundaries, which made it difficult for me to fully invest in the story.
Final Verdict
I Fell in Love with a Friend’s Girlfriend… is a difficult novel to recommend. While it might appeal to readers specifically seeking out the niche themes it explores, the problematic elements and questionable character motivations make it a challenging read. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, and requires a strong tolerance for ethically ambiguous situations. Ultimately, for me, the execution didn't quite live up to the potential, resulting in a somewhat unsatisfying experience. Proceed with extreme caution.
