Author profile

This one starts as a relatively breezy historical romance with secret identities, then shifts tone so dramatically that the story you finish is almost unrecognizable from the one you started. Whether that's a problem depends on what you came for.

The female lead, Qingge, is the reason to read this. She's a former slave turned cunning operative, and the story doesn't soften her ruthlessness to make her more palatable. Some of her revenge-driven choices are genuinely extreme, and the novel doesn't flinch. That willingness to let the FL be morally complicated rather than simply competent sets it apart from most historical josei romance.

The male lead's arc is solid too. He starts arrogant in the expected way, but his evolution into someone who genuinely respects and supports Qingge after being tested is earned rather than declared. The political intrigue, rival factions, and the Yellow Sect rebel threat layer in enough complexity that the plot isn't just a romance with historical window dressing.

The weaknesses are structural. The number of male characters who end up related to or romantically interested in Qingge tips into excess at points, diluting rather than enriching the main dynamic. And the tonal shift from lighthearted early chapters into sustained angst and darkness isn't a smooth transition. Some readers clearly wanted the version of this story that stayed in the fun-face-slapping register.

At 4.3 this is a well-above-average entry. The FL alone earns that. Just know going in that the lighter tone is bait, and the real novel is considerably heavier.

Synopsis

She was a secret guard, codenamed 37, later named Qingge by Ning Wang. One day, she narrowly escaped death and was sent out to recover from her injuries. On the way, someone approached her, claiming she resembled the young lady he served. The young lady was suffering from a chronic illness, and he asked her to take her place in the wedding, hiding the truth from the groom for five months. The man offered her a generous sum of silver notes, and Qingge, being greedy, accepted. But what she never expected was that the fiancée’s groom turned out to be none other than her master, Ning Wang… Fortunately, no one knew the face of the secret guards, except for Heaven, Earth, and their Pavilion Master. Ning Wang had no idea. Qingge successfully hid her identity and cautiously played the role of a Wangfei. Ning Wang was extraordinarily handsome but had a violent temper. One day, while investigating a traitor, he harshly interrogated all the secret guards. One of them ended up being punished for a trivial matter, receiving a hundred whip lashes, leaving the ground stained with blood. Ning Wang remained indifferent. The Emperor arranged a marriage for Ning Wang with the legitimate daughter of the presitigious Xiahou clan of Ganliang. The Wangfei was gentle, charming, and pure in nature. Initially, Ning Wang was indifferent and cautious but eventually fell for her. After ten months of pregnancy, the Wangfei gave birth to a son. When she returned after a visit to her natal family, Ning Wang gripped her by the throat and coldly demanded, “Where is this prince’s Wangfei?” Though the woman before him looked alike, she was not her. It was then that he realized the Wangfei he had shared his life with was a fake, brought in by the Xiahou family with money! In his fury, Ning Wang unleashed a bloodbath. Afterward, he searched everywhere for that woman, but despite turning the world upside down, he could not find her. Three years passed, and Ning Wang’s initial rage and hatred turned into silence and contemplation, eventually giving way to quiet coldness. Until one day, under the dim light of the waning moon, he gazed at the fallen phoenix tree leaves at his feet, covering the elongated shadow of the secret guard behind him. In a low voice, he asked, “It’s you, isn’t it?”
