My Thoughts on Hide Away
"Hide Away" definitely grabbed my attention with its blend of drama, romance, and school life. It's a story about overcoming misunderstandings and finding genuine connection, and I found myself invested in the journey of the two main characters. While it has some pacing issues, the core relationship is compelling enough to make it a worthwhile read.
First Impressions
The initial setup is quite intriguing. We have a protagonist, Lin Hexi, who is unfairly judged based on rumors, and a male lead, You Chong, who initially views him with disdain. I appreciated that Lin Hexi, despite the negativity surrounding him, maintains a certain level of confidence and playfulness. This made him a unique and instantly likeable character. You Chong's initial disgust is understandable, rooted in his upbringing and the information he's presented with. It's not a case of outright bullying, which is a refreshing change.
What Works Well
The slow-burn development of the relationship between Lin Hexi and You Chong is a major strength. It feels natural and earned, especially given their rocky start. I enjoyed watching You Chong gradually recognize the truth behind Lin Hexi's facade and begin to see him for who he truly is. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and once they get together, their interactions are genuinely sweet and heartwarming. Lin Hexi's strength in dealing with hardships and his determination to overcome obstacles on his own really made him a well-rounded character in my eyes.
Areas of Concern
The pacing in the latter half of the novel felt a bit rushed to me. Some plot threads, especially those involving You Chong's family, felt underdeveloped. The resolution to the conflict with You Chong's father felt abrupt and unsatisfying, considering the significant impact he had on the characters. Similarly, the lack of focus on side characters, despite their potential, was a bit disappointing.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I'll delve into some spoiler-y bits. The initial chapters are heartbreaking, as we see the vulnerability beneath Lin Hexi's seemingly carefree exterior. It's tough to watch him face constant misunderstanding. However, the payoff of You Chong recognizing his true nature is well worth it. The family drama, particularly involving You Chong's father, creates significant conflict.
Final Verdict
Despite some shortcomings in pacing and resolution, I found "Hide Away" to be an enjoyable and emotionally resonant story. The unique character of Lin Hexi, the realistic development of the central relationship, and the overall sweetness of their interactions make it a worthwhile read. If you're a fan of shounen ai with a touch of drama and a focus on character growth, I'd recommend giving "Hide Away" a try.
