My Thoughts on Guidelines for Role-Playing Rule-Based Strange Stories [Unlimited]
This web novel is quite the ride, a blend of genres that keeps you guessing. It's got that "unlimited flow" premise I've seen before, but with its own unique spin that grabbed my attention early on. I went in expecting a typical system story, but found something far more quirky and engaging.
First Impressions
The initial setup is intriguing. Instead of the usual audience-driven system, we have "investors" watching the "explorers" as they role-play in bizarre scenarios. It feels a bit like quick transmigration, but with a focus on the acting and puzzle-solving aspect within each "instance," or arc. The MC definitely stands out; he's not your typical goody-two-shoes protagonist. His moral compass is… flexible, to say the least, and he sometimes comes across as almost sociopathic, which is a refreshing change of pace.
What Works Well
The sheer variety of the arcs is a major selling point. One moment you're in a Cthulhu-esque nightmare that keeps you up at night, the next you're laughing at the MC's antics in a completely different setting. The author seems to have a knack for creating unique and memorable scenarios. I also appreciate the humor sprinkled throughout, especially from the investors. The world-building and the logic behind each arc are definitely highlights. The side characters are also likable and add to the overall enjoyment of the story.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest concerns is the romance, or rather, the lack thereof. The male lead is often relegated to the sidelines, acting more as a tool for the MC than a fully fleshed-out character. While the dynamic can be cute, it definitely leaves something to be desired if you're looking for a strong romantic subplot. The arc lengths can also be a bit uneven, with one particularly long arc feeling like it drags on despite being broken into mini-arcs. The MC sometimes overshadows the other players, making them seem less competent by comparison.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have mentioned that the male lead is actually a god from the first arc who gets summoned by the MC in later worlds. It also seems the MC has a clear upper hand in the relationship.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Guidelines for Role-Playing Rule-Based Strange Stories [Unlimited]" is a captivating read. The unique premise, engaging characters, and wildly imaginative arcs make it a novel I find myself constantly wanting to return to. If you're looking for a story that blends horror, comedy, and a morally ambiguous protagonist, this might just be your cup of tea. Just don't go in expecting a romance-heavy plot, and be prepared for some disturbing descriptions along the way!
