My Thoughts on Guardian (Bu Hui Xia Qi)
"Guardian (Bu Hui Xia Qi)" is a web novel that definitely sparked some strong opinions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a story with a lot of heart, but also some potentially problematic elements depending on your personal preferences.
First Impressions
I was initially drawn in by the premise of a rebirth story with familial love at its core. The idea of the MC getting a second chance to escape a terrible fate and find solace with his older brother sounded promising. The initial chapters set up the family conflict and the MC's difficult past effectively, creating a sense of intrigue.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the author for creating likeable characters and a plot that moves along at a good pace. The side characters, in particular, seem to be a highlight, adding humor and depth to the story. I appreciated the balance between plot, fluff, and drama, and the fact that the author gave most of the characters, even the villains, a sense of closure. Some also liked the MC's personality, finding his shyness and straightforwardness refreshing. The absence of over-the-top revenge plots was also a plus in my book. It's a story about finding happiness and focusing on loved ones, which is a theme I can definitely get behind.
Areas of Concern
Here's where things get a little tricky. A recurring concern among readers revolves around the relationship between the MC and ML. The age gap, coupled with the ML's role as the MC's guardian, raises uncomfortable questions about power dynamics. Some felt that the ML's feelings developed too quickly and that the MC's acceptance of the relationship felt more like obligation than genuine affection. The word "g\*ooming" was brought up several times, and I can see where those concerns are coming from. Even though the characters aren't blood-related, the initial setup definitely treads into potentially icky territory for some readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I need to be careful. There's a spoiler about the ML not wanting to kill his father, which some readers found unsatisfying, and another about their lack of blood relation. Be warned!
Final Verdict
"Guardian (Bu Hui Xia Qi)" is a story with a lot of potential, but it's not without its flaws. If you're willing to overlook the potentially problematic elements of the central relationship, you might find it to be a sweet and heartwarming read with charming characters and a satisfying conclusion. However, if age gaps and power dynamics are triggers for you, this might be one to skip. Ultimately, it's a matter of personal taste. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and being prepared to grapple with some uncomfortable themes.
