My Thoughts on Gotham City Simulator
"Gotham City Simulator" is a wild ride! I went in expecting a simple Batman fanfic and got something far more complex and engaging. It's a story that sucks you in, makes you laugh, and leaves you pondering the mysteries long after you've finished reading. While it has a few stumbles near the end, the overall experience is definitely worth the time.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was hooked by the premise. A protagonist navigating Gotham, not as a superhero, but as a city-builder with multiple identities? It's a fresh take on a familiar world, and I appreciated how the author kept the focus on Vivi's story, allowing established characters like Batman and the Joker to play supporting roles. The early chapters are episodic and fun, focusing on Vivi's quirky solutions to Gotham's problems, and I found myself eager to see what she'd do next.
What Works Well
The world-building is phenomenal. Even with only a basic knowledge of the DC universe, I was able to fully immerse myself in the story. The author clearly did their research, creating a believable and captivating version of Gotham City. I particularly enjoyed the humor, which felt natural and never forced. The characters, while not deeply explored, are well-written and engaging, and I found myself invested in their fates. The plot is intricate and full of twists, keeping you guessing until the very end.
Areas of Concern
The ending felt rushed, no question. While I appreciate that the author provided answers, the pacing of the final chapters felt off, and some plot points felt underdeveloped. I wish there had been more exploration of Vivi's different personas, particularly Mr. C, who had so much potential. The hints of a possible romance with Jason Todd also felt a little sudden and could have used more buildup.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several aspects of the story are better experienced without prior knowledge. However, to address some common questions, the story delves into the concept of Gotham having two city souls and how Vivi's multiple identities are linked to real people who had to die. The ending involves a failed summoning of an Eldritch Horror and Vivi's true nature as the soul of New Gotham. There's also the ambiguity surrounding the relationship between Vivi and Jason Todd. If you prefer to go in blind, skip this section!
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Gotham City Simulator" is a standout fanfic that I would highly recommend. The engaging plot, well-developed world, and humorous writing make it a thoroughly enjoyable read. While the ending could have been stronger, the overall journey is well worth the investment. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
