My Thoughts on Evil As Humans
"Evil As Humans" has been quite the ride! Diving into a world of supernatural investigations, intertwining mysteries, and a blossoming romance, I found myself thoroughly entertained, though not without a few minor hiccups along the way.
First Impressions
Admittedly, the synopsis didn't immediately grab me. However, I'm so glad I took the plunge. The novel throws you right into the thick of things with Yin Ren, a carefree "evil being," getting recruited into a department that handles supernatural matters. Paired with the serious and scientifically-minded Zhong Chengshuo, the dynamic is instantly engaging. I was intrigued by the initial mysteries surrounding both characters and their unusual partnership.
What Works Well
The romance is definitely a highlight. I loved seeing their relationship evolve from an odd pairing to partners, accomplices, and ultimately, lovers. It's a slow burn, but the author masterfully portrays their growing trust and affection. Many will find their interactions endearing, especially their straightforward communication and mutual understanding.
I found the plot to be intricate and well-planned. Each arc presents a unique case, but they all contribute to a larger, overarching narrative. The author's imagination shines through in the wild and fascinating monster descriptions and the bizarre situations the characters encounter. I also appreciated the subtle humor woven throughout the story, which provided a welcome contrast to the darker elements. Also, the side characters are well-developed, and their backstories add depth and richness to the world.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the complex plot, I can see how some readers might find it overwhelming. The sheer amount of detail can be hard to keep track of, and the number of terms used to describe evil can be confusing at first. Also, the initial pacing might be too slow for readers who prefer a faster, more action-packed story. Some may also find the horror elements lacking and prefer something scarier.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews contain significant spoilers about the characters' true identities and the overarching plot. Proceed with caution if you prefer to discover these details yourself.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Evil As Humans" to be a captivating and rewarding read. The well-developed characters, intricate plot, and sweet romance make it a standout in the supernatural BL genre. While it may not be for everyone, those who enjoy complex mysteries, imaginative world-building, and a touch of horror will find much to love in this novel. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
