My Thoughts on Even the Lame Got Tricked by Me Into Standing Up
This web novel is a wild ride, and I'm here for it! "Even the Lame Got Tricked by Me Into Standing Up" dives headfirst into a world of supernatural mysteries, family dynamics, and a healthy dose of black-bellied humor. It's definitely a unique blend of genres that kept me entertained from beginning to end.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was hooked by the protagonist, Gu Ye. He's reborn after sacrificing himself and lands in a new body, ready to shake things up. What immediately grabbed my attention was the family dynamic. Forget the typical evil stepmother trope; Madam Gu is a force of nature, a scheming mastermind with a fierce love for her family, stepchildren included. The younger stepbrother is an airhead and adds a comedic touch, making the family interactions a highlight.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a standout. This novel manages to balance dark themes and serious social commentary with laugh-out-loud moments. Gu Ye himself is hilarious, smart, and completely shameless, a combination that makes him incredibly likeable. I loved watching him solve cases, not just because of the supernatural elements, but because he brought a sense of justice and wasn't afraid to screw over those who deserved it.
The family relationships are also fantastic. It's refreshing to see a stepmother who genuinely cares for the MC, even if she shows it in a tsundere-like way. The slow-burn romance with the ML is sweet, although the story focuses more on Gu Ye's ghost-hunting adventures and his relationships with others. I appreciated that the ML, while powerful, doesn't overshadow the MC and allows him to shine.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, it's not without its flaws. Some of the cases felt a bit repetitive towards the end, and the introduction of certain plot points could be clunky. I also found myself wanting more development for some of the side characters, especially the younger Mu brother and his high school friends. The ending, while satisfying for some, left me wanting more closure on certain plot threads.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
There are some significant spoilers that are worth noting. Gu Ye's original father is revealed to be Yama, the King of Hell, explaining his immense power. Also, there's a scene where Gu Ye's past life's mother, who abandoned him, gets slapped by his stepmother after she tries to take his belongings. This moment perfectly encapsulates the unconventional and heartwarming family dynamic.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor issues, "Even the Lame Got Tricked by Me Into Standing Up" is a highly enjoyable read. The combination of humor, supernatural mysteries, and heartwarming family interactions makes it a unique and memorable web novel. If you're looking for a story with a strong, clever protagonist, a refreshing take on family tropes, and plenty of laughs, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
