My Thoughts on To Raise a Soul
I've been following "To Raise a Soul" with great interest, and I have to say, it's been quite the ride so far. This novel blends comedy, romance, slice of life, and the supernatural into a surprisingly cohesive and engaging story. The hints of yaoi add another layer to the dynamic, making it a fun read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a "weak to strong" protagonist navigating a world of cultivation and ghosts. The amnesia element adds a nice touch of mystery. The early chapters set a lighthearted tone, focusing on the main character's initial confusion and adjustment to his new reality.
What Works Well
The strength of "To Raise a Soul" lies in its characters, particularly the male lead's family. They are, without a doubt, the highlight of the story. Their staunch support of the main couple and their hilarious antics create some truly memorable moments. I especially enjoyed the misunderstandings that arise, often due to the male lead's taciturn nature. It's a refreshing take on the "cool and composed" trope, and the author uses it to great comedic effect. The interactions between the main characters are sweet and endearing, even if the romance develops at a slow burn. I also appreciate the blend of cultivation elements with Taoist-inspired ghost stories. It adds an intriguing layer to the world-building.
Areas of Concern
The main character's initial passivity, and the male lead's father's lack of development, did give me some pause. I was hoping for more proactivity from them. However, the story has plenty of time to address these concerns as it progresses.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I'm treading lightly. Some readers mentioned that the story stops at a particularly frustrating point, right when the MC's DNA donor makes an appearance and the main characters are finally getting together. This cliffhanger definitely stings!
Final Verdict
Despite some minor pacing issues and the frustrating cliffhanger, I'm thoroughly enjoying "To Raise a Soul." The charming characters, the comedic misunderstandings, and the intriguing blend of genres make it a worthwhile read. I'm eager to see how the story develops and how the main characters grow. If you're looking for a sweet, funny, and supernatural romance with a strong emphasis on character interactions, I recommend giving this novel a try.
