My Thoughts on Do Not Reconcile
"Do Not Reconcile" is a completed original web novel with an ongoing translation that I decided to dive into, drawn in by its adult, mature, and smutty promise. It's a rollercoaster of a ride, and my feelings are definitely mixed. While it has its moments, there are some aspects that held it back from being a truly enjoyable read for me.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a second chance romance with a "cold" male lead and a forward female lead. The tags promised plenty of spice, and I was hoping for a story that balanced the plot with the steam. However, I quickly realized that the plot might not be the strongest element here.
What Works Well
The main draw, for many, is the explicit content. I can see why some readers found the smut enjoyable, particularly because the female lead is portrayed as assertive and unashamed of her desires. I also appreciated that the story attempts to provide a reason for the initial breakup, moving beyond typical clichés. The translation is easy to understand, which is always a plus.
Areas of Concern
The plot is where things get shaky. Some of the scenarios felt contrived, designed to create misunderstandings and drama rather than build genuine conflict. The female lead's characterization as a spoiled, rich girl also grated on me at times. Her actions, like tampering with condoms to get pregnant, felt manipulative and detracted from my ability to root for her. Moreover, some of the "old wives' tales" and potentially misogynistic statements sprinkled throughout the story were off-putting.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
(Highlight to reveal spoilers) Some readers might be put off by the male lead's initial behavior upon reuniting with the female lead, which some describe as borderline abusive. Also, the revelation that the "fiancée" is actually a cousin might not be enough to excuse his actions in some readers' eyes. The female lead's deliberate attempt to get pregnant could be a major turn-off for those who dislike such tropes.
Final Verdict
"Do Not Reconcile" is a novel that's likely to divide readers. If you're primarily here for the smut and can overlook some questionable plot choices and character flaws, you might find it enjoyable. However, if you're looking for a well-developed story with nuanced characters and a strong moral compass, this might not be the book for you. For me, it was an okay read, but not one that I'd rush to recommend.
