My Thoughts on Derail

"Derail" promised a mature romance with a healthy dose of spice, and for the most part, it delivered. It's a quick, easy read, perfect for when you want something light and fluffy but with characters who feel like actual adults navigating their lives. While it might not be the most groundbreaking story, it offers a pleasant escape.

First Impressions

Going in, I was expecting a fairly straightforward friends-with-benefits plot, and that's essentially what I got. The initial setup is simple: two former high school acquaintances reconnect and decide to enter a no-strings-attached arrangement. However, the story quickly evolves beyond just smut, delving into the characters' pasts and their individual emotional baggage.

What Works Well

I really appreciated the mature approach to the romance. The characters have their own lives, careers, and experiences that shape their perspectives. The dynamic between the leads felt realistic, with both having their own insecurities and fears about taking their relationship to the next level. I especially enjoyed the male lead's POV, which provided valuable insight into his feelings and motivations. The author did a great job of portraying their growing attraction and the gradual blurring of the lines between friendship and something more.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the overall story, I did have some reservations. The romance sometimes felt a bit rushed, relying more on physical attraction than deep emotional connection. Some may find the backstory involving the male lead's high school relationship problematic. I also felt that their shared past could have been explored more thoroughly to enhance the story.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers might find the male lead's past actions off-putting. He dated a "friend" of the female lead, knowing she was using her, and treated her poorly. While it's presented as a form of misguided protection of the female lead, it's still a questionable choice that might make some readers uncomfortable.

Final Verdict

Overall, I'd recommend "Derail" if you're looking for a short, mature romance with plenty of spice and a feel-good ending. While it's not without its flaws, the engaging plot and well-developed characters make it an enjoyable read. I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a satisfying story that I wouldn't hesitate to pick up again when I'm in the mood for something light and heartwarming.

Synopsis

There were rules for being friends with benefits. No kissing, no staying overnight, no flirting in public… It didn’t matter how they found their release on the bed, as long as things were appropriate off the bed. With regards to this, Yu Huan and Gao Yan had always done a good job about it. Until a new intern came to Yu Huan’s law firm. And that person was Gao Yan’s nephew— Things began to derail. Note: The nephew just plays an important role in pushing the plot and nothing else.
