My Thoughts on Delicate Mother of a Villain
"Delicate Mother of a Villain" promises a fluffy slice-of-life adventure with a strong female lead navigating the entertainment world while raising her son. I dove in expecting a lighthearted read, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself ultimately conflicted.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the premise of a capable woman from an apocalyptic world transmigrating into the body of a struggling starlet. The idea of her using her survival skills in the modern world, coupled with a cute child-rearing dynamic, was definitely appealing. I was intrigued by the initial setup.
What Works Well
One of the biggest draws for me, and for many readers, is the absence of a traditional romance. The focus remains firmly on the MC and her son, creating a refreshing dynamic. The MC's strength and independence are admirable, and it's satisfying to see her carve her own path without relying on a male lead. I particularly enjoyed the moments of "face-slapping," where she confidently deals with those who underestimate her.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel does fall into some common pitfalls. The "Mary Sue" nature of the protagonist became increasingly glaring. Opportunities seem to fall into her lap effortlessly, often attributed solely to her beauty. This lack of struggle can make the plot feel contrived and lessen the impact of her achievements. Additionally, I felt that the plot started to drag on in the second half, with the entertainment industry storyline becoming repetitive. The supporting characters also felt underdeveloped, and plot threads were left unresolved.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed disappointment with the novel's handling of certain plot points. The MC's cheat, where eating fatty foods enhances her beauty, felt absurd to some. There's also the matter of the MC's jade, which grants her strength and a space, and another that causes bad luck to others. These elements, while adding a fantastical touch, felt out of place and detracted from the story's grounded nature. Some felt that certain plot points, like the emperor of cinema and the MC's scriptwriter friend, were left unresolved.
Final Verdict
"Delicate Mother of a Villain" is a mixed bag. If you're looking for a light, fluffy read with a strong female lead and a focus on family, you might enjoy it. However, be prepared for a somewhat predictable plot, an overly perfect protagonist, and a lack of depth in the supporting characters. Overall, I would say it is a decent read if you are looking for a quick time killer.
