My Thoughts on Copper Coins
I dove into "Copper Coins" with high expectations, given its solid rating and intriguing synopsis of a dragon, a monk, and a supernatural mystery. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable read, though not without its quirks.
First Impressions
The initial chapters immediately pulled me in with a blend of xuanhuan elements, mystery, and a dash of humor. The spunky, somewhat dramatic MC, a dragon in human form, paired with the stoic, amnesiac monk ML created an interesting dynamic that I was eager to explore. I appreciated how quickly the story jumped into action, setting the stage for the supernatural adventures to come.
What Works Well
Many readers, myself included, praised the engaging plot and the vibrant cast of characters. The mystery surrounding the dragon's missing bones and the monk's past kept me guessing, and I enjoyed how the side characters, like the terrified ghost and the blind man, added depth and humor to the story. I found the dynamic between the MC and ML to be particularly entertaining, especially their bickering. The author did a great job with the foreshadowing, weaving the backstories seamlessly into the overall plot. The ending was well-paced and conclusive, wrapping up loose ends for all the characters.
Areas of Concern
Despite my enjoyment, I did notice some recurring criticisms. The romance, while slow-burn, felt somewhat underdeveloped to some. Some readers felt the development of feelings between the leads felt unnatural, even nonsensical, and that the relationship was forced. Furthermore, the pacing felt rushed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers mentioned the infamous "dragon spit" incident, and I have to agree that it felt a bit out of place. While intended as comedic relief, it disrupted the pacing of the romance and felt like an unnecessary gimmick. It's a moment that could have been handled with more subtlety and nuance.
Final Verdict
"Copper Coins" is a captivating novel with a compelling mystery and a cast of memorable characters. While the romance might not be for everyone, the overall story is engaging and well-written. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy supernatural mysteries with a touch of humor and a slow-burn (albeit flawed) romance. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
