My Thoughts on Come To My Side
"Come To My Side" promised a fluffy, rom-com experience with a dash of family drama, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting a light read, and I wasn't disappointed. However, some plot threads felt unresolved, leaving me wanting more.
First Impressions
The initial setup is intriguing. We have Guan Xi, a seemingly spoiled "princess" living a life of luxury, suddenly confronted with the revelation that she's adopted, and the "real" daughter is back. I was immediately drawn into the potential conflict and how it would affect her relationship with her fiancé, our cold-but-caring male lead. The arranged marriage trope is a classic, but I was curious to see how the author would put a unique spin on it.
What Works Well
The characters are definitely the strongest point. Guan Xi, despite her materialistic tendencies, is surprisingly likeable. She's bold, sharp-tongued, and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I found her refreshing compared to the typical timid female leads often seen in these stories. Her best friend, Lang Ningyi, is an absolute MVP, providing comedic relief and insightful commentary based on her knowledge of web novels. The slow-burn romance between Guan Xi and her fiancé is also well-developed. They start with a relationship of convenience, but gradually develop genuine feelings for each other, built on mutual respect and understanding. Their interactions are mature and open, which I appreciated.
Areas of Concern
My main issue lies with the pacing and resolution of the family drama. The conflict between Guan Xi and the "real" daughter felt rushed and ultimately unsatisfying. It had the potential to be a major driving force of the plot, but it's resolved too quickly and then fades into the background. Similarly, the issues with Guan Xi's adoptive mother and her family are brushed aside without proper consequences. I was hoping for more "face-slapping" moments and a more impactful resolution to these conflicts. Additionally, I felt that the male lead's personal issues were glossed over. The story focuses heavily on Guan Xi, and while I enjoyed her character, I would have liked to see more depth and attention given to the male lead's struggles.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The biggest spoiler is that the MC is actually the biological daughter of the father and his first love. The mother of the "real" daughter essentially trapped the father into marriage.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Come To My Side" is an enjoyable and fluffy read, perfect for when you're looking for something light and entertaining. While the family drama and pacing could have been handled better, the strong characters and sweet romance make it a worthwhile read. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
