My Thoughts on Before His Eyes
"Before His Eyes" is a gentle story that really crept up on me. I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I came away feeling like I'd just had a warm cup of tea on a chilly evening. This novel focuses on Xiaozhuo, a character who might have been a bit of a background figure in "Ferocious Dog of Old", and it was lovely to see him get his own chance to shine.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a sweet, slow-burn romance. The tags certainly delivered: an anti-social, awkward protagonist paired with a more outgoing, handsome lead? Sign me up! The slice-of-life aspect also appealed to me; I was looking for something low-stakes and comforting.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the realistic portrayal of the characters and their relationship. Neither Xiaozhuo nor Shi Kai are perfect; they have their own insecurities and quirks, which made their connection feel all the more genuine. The pacing felt just right, never rushing their development but also never dragging. I particularly enjoyed watching Shi Kai slowly realize and embrace his feelings for Xiaozhuo. It felt natural and earned. The author does a fantastic job of portraying the subtle nuances of their interactions and the gradual deepening of their bond. The story focuses on simple moments, and it's those small, everyday instances that make the love between Xiaozhuo and Shi Kai feel so real and relatable.
Final Verdict
"Before His Eyes" is a delightful read. It's a short, sweet, and heartwarming story that I would happily recommend if you're looking for a gentle romance with well-developed characters and a realistic slice-of-life feel. It's not a story filled with high drama or over-the-top situations, but rather a quiet exploration of love, friendship, and personal growth. It's the perfect pick-me-up for when you need a little bit of comfort and warmth in your life.
