My Thoughts on Apotheosis – Ascension to Godhood

Apotheosis – Ascension to Godhood is a web novel that I approached with a mix of excitement and trepidation. With its blend of action, adventure, and cultivation, it seemed right up my alley. However, after diving in and considering various reader opinions, my feelings are…complicated.

First Impressions

Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a determined protagonist striving for godhood through martial arts and cultivation. The early chapters set the stage for a classic xuanhuan journey, with a focus on overcoming adversity and ascending to greater heights. I was particularly interested in the mystery surrounding his sister and the nine dragons.

What Works Well

Some readers praised the early parts of the story, particularly the main character's initial motivations and his path to becoming stronger. I can see the appeal in that. It’s always satisfying to watch a character grow and evolve, especially when they face seemingly insurmountable challenges. Some readers also enjoyed the intricate cultivation levels and how the MC navigates fights and challenges. The fact that the MC isn't overly romantic or cheesy was also a plus for some.

Areas of Concern

However, as I delved deeper, I began to see some recurring criticisms that gave me pause. Several readers pointed out issues with the plot, describing it as predictable and convoluted. The constant recycling of characters and events, especially after a certain point, seemed to wear thin for many. A major sticking point was the inconsistency in the MC's motivations and the repeated "damsel in distress" trope involving his sister. The power scaling also seems to get out of control, with enemies becoming stronger for the sake of plot convenience.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Many reviews contain potential spoilers, so proceed with caution! A particularly contentious plot point revolves around a character known as the Evil God, a manifestation of the MC's own hatred. The way this character is handled, from his initial betrayal to his repeated resurrections and power-ups, drew considerable ire from readers. Additionally, some found the depiction of certain events, including a controversial scene involving the MC, to be problematic.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, Apotheosis – Ascension to Godhood feels like a novel with a lot of potential that unfortunately stumbles along the way. While the early parts might hook you with their classic cultivation tropes and determined protagonist, the convoluted plot, inconsistent character motivations, and questionable writing choices could ultimately lead to disappointment. I'd recommend approaching this one with caution, and perhaps tempering your expectations.
