My Thoughts on Ancient Godly Monarch

Ancient Godly Monarch...it's a web novel that's been sitting on my "to read" list for a while now, and after finally diving in, I can see why it's earned both praise and criticism. It's a xuanhuan story with a lot of familiar elements, but also some unique twists that kept me somewhat engaged.

First Impressions

Initially, I was hooked. The early chapters promised a fresh take on the genre, particularly with the constellation-based cultivation system. It felt different enough to pique my interest, and I was eager to see how the protagonist, Qin Wentian, would develop. There was a strong start, and I felt the story was going to be good.

What Works Well

The cultivation system, revolving around constellations, is definitely a highlight. It's a refreshing change from the typical qi-gathering methods often found in similar novels. I liked that the MC wasn't immediately overpowered and that his growth felt earned, at least in the beginning. The relationships between Qin Wentian and his friends were also pretty good, there was a real sense of brotherhood.

Areas of Concern

However, the initial excitement waned as I progressed. A common sentiment I've seen is that the story falls into repetitive patterns. The cycle of encountering arrogant young masters, defeating them, and then facing repercussions from their clans became tiresome. The plot felt generic, relying too heavily on familiar xuanhuan tropes. The villains were often cartoonishly arrogant, and their motivations lacked depth. The MC's dialogue also felt arrogant at times, which was odd.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have pointed out that the initial focus on Qin Wentian's hammer-based fighting style later shifts to swordsmanship, which feels inconsistent. Additionally, there are instances where the author seems to forget earlier plot points, such as Qin Wentian's talent for divine inscriptions.

Final Verdict

Overall, Ancient Godly Monarch is an average xuanhuan novel. It has moments of brilliance, particularly in its unique cultivation system and the initial character development. However, it suffers from repetitive plotlines, shallow villains, and a lack of consistent world-building. If you're a fan of the genre and looking for a relatively easy read, it might be worth checking out. But, it's important to go in with tempered expectations. I'd give it a 3/5. It's not terrible, but it's not groundbreaking either.

Synopsis

In the Province of the Nine Skies, far above the heavens, there exists Nine Galaxies of Astral Rivers made up of countless constellations interwoven together. For Martial Cultivators, they could form an innate link with one of the constellations, awaken their Astral Soul, and transform into a Stellar Martial Cultivator. Legend has it that, the strongest cultivators in the Province of the Nine Skies, were beings that could open an astral gate every time they advanced into a new realm. Their talent in cultivation was such that they could even establish innate links with constellations that existed in a layer higher than the Nine Layers of Heavens, eventually transforming into the heaven-defying and earth-shattering power known as the War God of the Nine Heavens. Qin Wentian is the MC of this story. How could a guy, with a broken set of meridians, successfully cultivate? There were countless Stellar Martial Cultivators, as there were countless constellations in the vast starry skies. What he wanted to be, was the brightest constellation of all, shining dazzlingly in the vast starry skies.
