My Thoughts on Ancient Foodie Survival Guide
Alright, buckle up, foodie fans, because "Ancient Foodie Survival Guide" is quite the ride! I went in expecting a light historical romance, and while it delivers on the "light" part, the real star here is the food. Seriously, be prepared to have your stomach growling constantly.
First Impressions
My initial impression was "Wow, this is a LOT about food." The descriptions are incredibly detailed, almost to the point where it feels like reading a food blog rather than a novel. The romance takes a backseat, especially early on, and the focus is squarely on the female lead's culinary adventures and how she wins everyone over with her delicious creations. It’s definitely a unique approach, and whether you love it or hate it probably depends on your expectations going in.
What Works Well
The characters are genuinely enjoyable. I particularly appreciated that there aren't really any mustache-twirling villains. Instead, you find characters with different values and perspectives, leading to some interesting relationship dynamics. The author does a great job of exploring their backstories and motivations, redeeming characters I initially disliked. The second sister-in-law’s story arc was a standout for me, showcasing personal growth and the importance of being true to oneself. The family dynamics are also well-written; even the matriarch, who initially clashes with the FL, is portrayed with nuance and depth. And the male lead? He's supportive and sweet, which provides a welcome change from the usual cold and domineering types.
Areas of Concern
If you're primarily looking for a romance, this might not be your cup of tea (unless that tea is paired with a perfectly crafted dumpling!). The romantic development is slow, and sometimes feels secondary to the food descriptions. Also, the ending felt a little rushed, and a few plot threads seemed to be left dangling. Plus, while the lack of intense drama is refreshing, some readers might find the overall plot a bit too simple and uneventful.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed strong feelings about the second brother's actions and his relationship with his wife. While the author attempts a redemption arc, opinions are divided on whether it's successful or if he remains an irredeemable "s*umbag." Also, be aware that the consummation of the main couple's marriage is quite late in the story and rather vaguely described.
Final Verdict
Despite its minor flaws, I found "Ancient Foodie Survival Guide" to be a delightful and relaxing read. If you're a foodie at heart and enjoy slice-of-life stories with well-developed characters and low-stakes drama, then I highly recommend giving this novel a try. Just make sure you have snacks on hand!
