My Thoughts on Akugyaku no Black Maria
After diving into "Akugyaku no Black Maria," I've come away with a fairly positive impression, though it's a novel with some quirks. It's definitely not your run-of-the-mill isekai, and it confidently strides into darker territory, which is a major draw for me.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a seemingly apathetic protagonist, Shizuru, molded into the perfect assassin, not through brute strength, but through manipulation and a disarming bedside manner as a physician. This subversion of the typical OP isekai hero is refreshing. The setting, while initially feeling familiar, quickly establishes itself as a breeding ground for morally grey characters and twisted scenarios.
What Works Well
The characters, without a doubt, are the strongest aspect of this novel. Shizuru, despite his apparent lack of ambition, is a compelling figure. It's fascinating to watch him navigate the treacherous waters of the assassin organization, "Black Maria," using his charisma and medical skills to both gain trust and eliminate targets. The supporting cast, especially the other assassins, are a delightfully deranged bunch. From yanderes to cannibals, each member brings a unique flavor of crazy to the table, and their interactions with Shizuru are often hilarious and occasionally disturbing. I also appreciate how the author delves into their backstories, adding depth and complexity to these otherwise psychopathic individuals. The mature themes and dark comedy are also a huge plus, creating a unique and engaging reading experience.
Areas of Concern
While the characters are a major strength, some readers might find the initial setup a bit slow. The first few chapters are dedicated to world-building and introducing the extensive cast, which can feel like a bit of a slog. Also, while I enjoyed the MC's manipulative nature, I can see why some readers might find him bland or even dislikeable. His lack of clear goals and willingness to be a "slut doll" for the organization's members can be off-putting. Translation quality is also a recurring issue, with frequent grammatical errors and awkwardly placed translator's notes potentially disrupting the reading flow.
