My Thoughts on After Winning The Esports Championship, I’m going To Pilot A Mecha
This novel took me by surprise. Going in, I expected a fairly standard mecha story with a transmigrated protagonist, but what I found was much more complex and engaging. "After Winning The Esports Championship, I’m going To Pilot A Mecha" is a wild ride through a world of conspiracies, betrayals, and intense mecha battles.
First Impressions
The initial hook is definitely unique. Ji Mingzhu, our MC, wins an esports championship and immediately finds himself transmigrated into a world where mechas are reality. The story throws you right into the deep end, with Ji Mingzhu waking up as part of an anti-government organization with no memories. It's a chaotic start, and I was immediately curious to see how he'd navigate this dangerous situation.
What Works Well
The world-building is a standout feature. The author does a great job of revealing the world piece by piece, mirroring Ji Mingzhu's own discovery. I appreciated that the story doesn't info-dump; instead, we learn about the AI, the "humans," and the "aberrations" organically as the plot unfolds. The action sequences are also incredibly well-written. I could easily visualize the mecha battles, and the author clearly has a passion for the genre.
Ji Mingzhu himself is a compelling protagonist. He's clever, adaptable, and morally grey, which makes him far more interesting than your typical hero. He's not afraid to kill, scheme, or betray to survive, but he does have a bottom line. I also enjoyed his dynamic with his AI companion, Axiu (also known as Canglan). Their interactions are often sarcastic and funny, providing some much-needed levity amidst the heavy plot.
Areas of Concern
The ending felt a bit rushed and open-ended. While I appreciate a good cliffhanger, I was left wanting more closure for the characters and the world. I wanted to see the newly rebuilt world, and I was disappointed that there weren't any extra chapters to tie up loose ends.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have noted that the shounen ai tag is misleading. While there are hints of romance, it's very subtle and more akin to bromance. If you're going into this expecting a full-blown love story, you might be disappointed. However, the strong bond between Ji Mingzhu and Axiu is definitely a highlight.
Final Verdict
Despite my minor gripes with the ending, I thoroughly enjoyed "After Winning The Esports Championship, I’m going To Pilot A Mecha." It's a thrilling and well-crafted story with a unique premise, compelling characters, and intense action. If you're a fan of mecha, sci-fi, and morally grey protagonists, I highly recommend giving this novel a read.
